The results are in for our 'design a water-saving poster' competition

Graphic stating "design an water-saving poster"

In June, we asked children to design a poster which encourages people to save water.

The competition was open for children of South Staffs Water’s customers and there was a £30 book voucher up for grabs for the two winners (one for each age group; 5 to 7 year-old children; and 8 to 11 year-old children). We received many great entries, with all of the posters bursting with creativity and top tips on saving water.

Following our closing date on 24 July 2020, the entries were submitted to our independent customer panel for deliberation. The panel was so impressed with all of the entries that it was unable to select just one poster, so we opened it up to first and second place for each category.

Runner-up: 5-7 year-old category

Iris, aged 7

In second place, is this fantastic poster by Iris (7) who reminds us all of the importance of taking four-minute showers and to use water wisely. Well done, Iris! Your £10 book voucher is on its way to you.

"This lovely poster works well because it is so simple and clear. The picture of the girl washing her hair is sweet, and the use of the letter 'O' in ’shower’ for the shower head is clever. It’s an effective poster and fun to look at - both good qualities if you want people to take notice."

Winner: 5-7 year-old category

Amelia, aged 7

In first place is Amelia with her 'Save water, water is life' creation. Amelia's use of the globe and dripping tap, as well as offering multiple water-saving messages, caught the attention of our customer panel, which awarded her poster the top accolade. Well done, Amelia! Your £30 book voucher is on its way to you.

"A very successful poster design, simple and direct, just what a poster should be if it is to have its effect on people.  'Save Water' and 'Water is Life' are great slogans; easy to read, easy to remember, and containing the whole message of the poster: what you should do, and why.  The globe and the dripping tap are a good eye-catcher, and perfect illustrations for the two slogans."

Runner-up: 8-11 year-old category

Tanya, aged 10

Our customer panel chose Tanya as the second-place winner in our 8-11 year-old category. The panel admired all of the hard work and research that went into the assembly of the poster and we couldn't agree more. Well done, Tanya! Your £10 book voucher is on its way to you.

"What a lot of hard work Tanya must have done to assemble this presentation. It is full of clever and inventive ideas, all drawn together by the inspired use of H2O."

Winner: 8-11 year-old category

Karam, aged 9

Our customer panel especially liked the use of colour and the inclusion of a water bug, to promote the water-saving messages in nine-year old Karam's design. Well done Karam for your first-place winning poster! Your £30 book voucher is on its way to you.

"Great use of colour to attract attention and a straightforward design which makes the four messages clear.  The Water Bug is a cool invention - fun and eye-catching."
