Leamore Primary School secured £2,000 of PEBBLE funding to enhance the ecological value of its school grounds through the creation of a new pond.

The grant covered the cost of pond construction, along with associated planting, including shrubs and aquatic plants. The project was designed to increase biodiversity, improve wildlife habitats and create an outdoor learning resource where pupils could explore ecology, conservation and the importance of protecting natural environments.

The project team encountered a number of challenges during delivery. Construction of the pond took longer than anticipated, which affected the planting schedule and resulted in planting being postponed until spring 2026.

The school received valuable support from the local community, including pupils, parents and carers who volunteered their time to help bring the project to life. The charity FrogLife also visited the school as part of Outdoor Learning Day, introducing pupils to the new pond and delivering training for staff to build confidence and knowledge around outdoor learning opportunities.

Since its completion, the pond has attracted a variety of wildlife, including damselflies, dragonflies, water boatmen, frogspawn, birds, butterflies, hedgehogs and foxes. Pupils have used the area during lessons to enhance their learning, observing plants, habitats and life cycles firsthand. The pond has also inspired creative activities across the curriculum, including sketching and poetry.

The project has received positive feedback from parents and the wider community, who recognise both its environmental and educational benefits. Looking ahead, the school plans to continue integrating the pond into the curriculum while monitoring its growing wildlife population and maximising opportunities for outdoor learning.
