Posted: 10 February 2025

Each year, we offer opportunities to young people to join us on a three-year apprenticeship scheme based in Walsall, on a competitive salary.

Apprentice for South Staffs Water using a control panelOur Apprenticeship Programme, otherwise known as our ‘Talent Pipeline’, provides young people with the core knowledge needed, alongside the experience of working in a practical environment, making the transition into full-time work a much smoother process.

Three of our current apprentices share more about their experience on the programme so far:

What persuaded you to apply for an apprenticeship with South Staffs Water?

Henry: “My auntie works for Severn Trent, and she recommended South Staffs because she previously worked for them and just said how much of a great company they are.

“Everyone has been so welcoming. I can't say enough about production and all the departments when I've been on rotation. They have been absolutely brilliant."

Harrison: “I applied for my apprenticeship after doing work experience here during my time at school and during the school holidays.

“My dad works here, and he’s done this job since I was born. I’ve got to know the people that work with him growing up and they’re all lovely."

What is it about the water industry that interests you?

Henry: “I'm really passionate about science and there's a lot of science that goes on around production such as the dosing and how to apply those chemicals. It’s really interesting and, as I've said to many people, it doesn't feel like a job. It feels like a hobby that I'm getting paid for, but also learning at the same time. It's just an absolute pleasure to come to work."

Jacob: “The water industry can affect so many different people. There are problems that can come up that you can help solve and generally you can help people.

“Learning the journey of water and how it comes out of our taps is really interesting."

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about their future or starting an apprenticeship?

Harrison: "It's the best thing I've done. You learn new things; you can earn money, and it gives you a chance to get out there and do stuff. I have particularly enjoyed working with our Customer Liaison Officers and hopefully, this is a role I will come into."

“You get to meet a lot of different people who are very welcoming and friendly and who pass on their knowledge.”

Jacob: “I would say just go for it. You learn great skills, you can earn money while you do it, and it can set you up for a job in the future.”
