World Soil Day – open farm event

World Soil Day is held annually on 5 December as a way of focusing attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil resources.

We work in partnership with the people and industries in our area to reduce and prevent the amount of pollutants in the soil and to stop them reaching our drinking water supplies.

We work with farmers to ensure water quality is maintained and improved through soil quality - this can also have other environmental benefits including reduced flood risk, more sustainable agriculture and improved understanding of pollution risks.

One of the ways we do this is through SPRING 2, our Environmental Protection Scheme. SPRING 2 offers farmers grants of up to £10k per farm towards the costs of land management options and improvements to protect the environment and improve water quality.
